Not every business needs a phone system. If you want a local number in a new market next week, the simplest option is to forward it to a mobile or landline you already have. Here’s when that works well and when it doesn’t.
How forwarding works
The call arrives on your virtual number and the provider places a second call to your mobile. Your phone rings, you answer, and the caller hears you as if you’d picked up at the number they dialled.
When forwarding is the right choice
- Testing a market. Put a local number on a landing page and see whether calls come in, without buying any equipment.
- Small teams. A founder or a two-person sales team can answer every call on their own phones.
- Out-of-hours cover. Forward to an on-call mobile outside office hours with time-of-day routing.
- Backup. Use a mobile as the failover destination if your PBX or Teams is unreachable.
What it costs
Forwarding to a phone number means the provider pays to call that phone, so you’re charged a per-minute forwarding rate that depends on the destination country and whether it’s a mobile. Delivering calls to SIP, Teams or a softphone is usually cheaper, because the call stays on IP. Compare the rates in the portal before you choose.
Limitations
- Caller ID. Some mobile networks show the caller’s number, others show your virtual number. It depends on the destination network.
- Voicemail. If your mobile’s voicemail picks up, the call is “answered” and billed. Keep ring timeouts shorter than your mobile voicemail delay, or use provider-side voicemail instead.
- Outbound calls. Forwarding handles inbound calls only. To call out showing your business number, use a softphone app or a SIP system.
When to upgrade
Once several people need to answer, or you need queues, recordings or reporting, move to a softphone, a cloud PBX or Microsoft Teams. Your number stays the same; only its destination changes.
