“Can my number send SMS?” is one of the most common questions we get. The answer depends on the number range and on what kind of messaging you mean.
Person-to-person style: SMS-enabled numbers
Some virtual number ranges can send and receive SMS, just like a mobile. Typical uses:
- customers replying to your business number
- appointment confirmations and one-to-one conversations
- receiving inbound texts to email, a CRM or a webhook
Availability varies by country. In many countries only mobile ranges carry SMS; in the US and Canada, local and toll-free numbers can often be text-enabled. Search results mark SMS-capable numbers where the range supports it.
Application-to-person (A2P) messaging
A2P covers messages sent by software to many people: one-time passwords, alerts, delivery notices and marketing. A2P traffic runs on dedicated routes with its own rules:
- Sender IDs: alphanumeric names such as “YOURBRAND” in countries that support them
- Registration: many countries require sender ID or campaign registration. In the US, business texting from local numbers requires 10DLC brand and campaign registration
- Throughput and filtering: carriers apply volume limits and content filtering to protect users from spam

Some services refuse virtual numbers for verification, and using numbers to create bulk accounts or bypass verification isn’t permitted.
Do toll-free numbers support SMS?
In the US and Canada, toll-free numbers can often be text-enabled after verification. Elsewhere it’s less common.
