Toll-free numbers remain one of the most recognisable signals in American business. A 1-800 number tells customers the call is free and the company is established. There are now seven toll-free prefixes, and all of them work identically.

Technically there’s no difference: calls are free to the caller, and all prefixes reach the whole NANP region, which includes the US and Canada. The difference is perception and availability. Memorable 800 numbers are scarce; 833 and 844 numbers are plentiful.
How toll-free numbers are managed
US toll-free numbers are administered through a central database. Each number is controlled by a “responsible organisation” (RespOrg), which is how numbers can be moved between providers while staying in service. That matters when you port a number.
Who pays?

Vanity numbers

Toll-free or local?
